East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust had scope
to extend their current operating services to provide a further four orthopaedic theatres to Kent and Canterbury Hospital.

The project, completed by MTX over various phases, first proceeded with the construction of a new medical physics building and the demolition of an existing office block, involving the removal of asbestos. Running concurrently the team refurbished the day care surgery department, delivered within strict timescales, working out of hours to minimise disruption to patients and staff.

Construction of the new single storey theatre complex comprised the installation of a total of 42 pre-fabricated building modules, carefully positioned to link directly into the hospital’s current ward department and within close proximity to the newly refurbished day care surgery.

The four state-of the-art operating theatre suites comprise a dedicated prep and anaesthetic, a bright and spacious reception with waiting area, an eight-bed recovery bay and all the necessary ancillary, as well as a dedicated top floor plant room to support the whole scheme.
