Bringing together the outpatient and surgical eye treatments currently delivered at Derriford Hospital this dedicated three-storey Ophthalmic facility, located on a new site, provides an additional third operating theatre to enable operations of a further 520 patients each month, along with 2,300 more outpatient appointments.
The ground floor consists of three operating theatres, recovery areas, and treatment rooms. One of the three operating theatres at the REI is dedicated to sub-specialisms, such as oculoplastic, orbital and corneal surgeries, and will significantly reduce waiting times for patients. The first floor was designed to accommodate consulting, examination and testing rooms, while the second floor has offices and plant areas for the medical IT, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and air handling systems.
Critical success factors for the project included adapting the design of the new facility to the challenging sloping site location, dealing with a sub-basement void uncovered during site preparation, achieving the required building specification and compliance, alongside managing the incredibly tight timescales and budget constraints.
The underpinning spirit of collaboration and co-operation that existed between the Trust as the client and MTX as the contractor was an essential element in continuing with the build programme... The trust between the contractor and client was also demonstrated in the open-handed approach to problem-solving and sharing any issues that arose. That level of trust and honesty on both sides is the true test of collaboration and genuine teamwork.
