MTX have completed a new Endoscopy unit which forms Phase 2 of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA) Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) in Oldham, one of the largest in the UK.

The 1800m² Endoscopy Unit comprises three endoscopy procedure rooms, four consulting rooms, a waiting room for around 20 people, recovery areas, and various ancillary accommodation. A dedicated plantroom on the first floor of the building houses specialist MEP equipment, including an RO water plant.

Preparing foundations for the new 2-storey facility presented particular challenges and involved the removal and disposal of a substantial quantity of contaminated soil at the former factory site. A sheet-piled wall was constructed to retain the sloping site which included a basement area and a former reservoir, requiring specific measures to ensure effective site drainage. MTX worked extensively with the structural engineer to find a cost-effective solution for the groundworks and remediation strategy which was developed throughout the design stage.

After thorough site investigations, MTX created a detailed plan for dealing with the challenges and creating the foundations for the new unit. While groundworks continued, 51 structural steel modules were manufactured offsite to shorten the project duration.

The facility will offer an additional 10,000 endoscopy procedures a year using the latest diagnostic equipment, whilst also cutting waiting times for tests and providing earlier detection of disease, thanks to easier access to testing within a community setting.

The new community endoscopy unit is a fantastic environment, providing us the opportunity to complete diagnostics quickly for our patients in a more convenient location to the busy hospital site. The facilities will ensure the experience for patients being treated and staff working there is of the highest standard.
