MTX 2024 Projects Round-up

Colchester Elective Orthopaedic Centre

One of the largest Elective Orthopaedic Centres in Europe, with eight dedicated orthopaedic operating theatres and 72 patient beds, has been created at Colchester Hospital by MTX Contracts Ltd.

The new three-storey 11,000m² facility for East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT) is the largest MMC development of its kind in the UK and was built in five phases, using a total of 293 offsite-manufactured structural steel units.

MTX Managing Director David Hartley comments: “Colchester is a perfect example of the MTX hybrid construction process with its factory-manufactured structural sections, poured concrete floors and progressive high quality fit out, taking the best from traditional building methodology and modern methods of construction.”

Four Community Diagnostic Projects handed over

The urgent need for fast-track build of bespoke medical facilities is encouraging more NHS Trusts to partner with specialist provider MTX for rapid and cost effective delivery, improving outcomes for patients and ensuring a quicker return on investment.

New Community Diagnostic Centre projects have been completed at Skegness, Lincoln, Oldham and the Wirral, all built using modern methods of construction.

Structural steel units were manufactured offsite while groundworks were under way onsite to create foundations. Mechanical and electrical services were manufactured as modules where appropriate to speed up the construction process and reduce costs.

Complex build of 32 bed ward on top of London’s busiest A&E

A £20 million 32-bed short-stay ward for Northwick Park Hospital was created above London’s busiest A&E Department by MTX in one of the most complex build programmes ever undertaken by the company.

A total of 32 structural steel modules manufactured offsite were used to construct the new ward on a steel deck installed on existing concrete stub columns. The challenging location required the use of one of Europe’s heaviest lifting tower cranes, around 40 metres high and with a ‘reach’ of 80 metres. Every component of the new ward was lifted onto the construction deck, including 200 tonnes of steel and almost 2000 construction boards.

New discharge lounge and palliative care beds at King’s Lynn

MTX delivered a 6-bed discharge lounge and 5-bed palliative care ward the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn within demanding timescales supporting RAAC recovery work at the hospital.

The two-storey stand-alone building is designed for reuse when the planned new hospital is built, with bespoke ground floor and first floor corridors linking back to the main building & hospital ‘street’.

The contract was awarded to MTX by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn NHS Foundation Trust, based our understanding of the complex site issues associated with QEH and building within an active blue light area. on MTX worked closely with the Trust’s multi-disciplinary design and construction consultancy partner exi which manages the RAAC failsafe programme at QEH.

Clatterbridge Theatres project complete

The second phase of a state-of-the-art surgical hub at Clatterbridge Hospital on the Wirral was completed by MTX, creating new operating theatres able to treat up to 6000 patients each year.

This £25 million innovative development employed offsite-manufactured steel-framed building sections craned onto the site alongside existing theatres at Clatterbridge Hospital, before installing exterior cladding, interior finishes and floor screeds.

MTX therefore began the extension before the first phase was handed over - working on the two projects simultaneously. Phase 1 contained two new operating theatres 12 patient recovery bays and a plant equipment room. Phase 2 included the two additional theatres, utility rooms, preparation rooms and anaesthetic rooms, and patient recovery areas.

Ball Tampering Allowed charity launch

MTX raised more than £55,000 with a sports lunch at Stockport County FC to launch the new charity ‘Ball Tampering Allowed’ and raise awareness of cancer issues among ‘lads and dads’.
It joined forces with North West-based cricket enthusiast Paul Ferriday who has fought his own battle with cancer.

MTX Managing Director David Hartley says: “We wanted to create a unique partnership with a charity working collaboratively and proactively. This charity is particularly relevant to the construction sector and almost 2 million men it employs.”

‘Ball Tampering Allowed’ name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to controversy during the 1994 Lord's Test against South Africa involving then England captain Mike Atherton (OBE), now the charity’s honorary president. It is now a call to action for early diagnosis of cancer!

Proud double for MTX at Offsite Awards

MTX celebrated receiving two top Offsite 2024 awards. The two-phase creation of a Surgical Hub and Community Diagnostic Centre at Clatterbridge Hospital on the Wirral was recognised as Healthcare Project of the Year 2024. A total of four new operating theatres were created along with additional staff and patient facilities for the surgical hub.

MTX also proudly accepted the award for Best Use of Hybrid Technology for the hugely challenging and complex project to create the 32-bed short-stay ward on the roof London’s busiest A&E Department at Northwick Park Hospital. Every component was craned onto the construction deck including 200 tonnes of steel and almost 2000 construction boards.
